About
Recognized by JETRO's Taste of Japan initiative as one of thirteen outstanding Japanese restaurants operating in China, Monbei has built a nine-restaurant operation across Shanghai centered on a single uncompromising commitment: hand-ground, hand-made buckwheat soba from whole grain. The process—milling the buckwheat in-house, then hand-cutting the noodles—preserves an earthy, nutty flavor and satisfying texture far superior to pre-made soba. Beyond soba, the menu is that of a full izakaya, with seasonal sashimi, grilled items, fried dishes, and stewed plates ensuring a complete Japanese meal. The flagship Hongqiao branch on Xingyi Road has operated for many years and draws reviews in Japanese from local Japanese residents who describe it as the closest to home-country soba in Shanghai. Additional branches operate on Ronghua East Road, Songyuan Road, and Tianshan Road among others.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • JETRO Taste of Japan recognition makes Monbei one of the few formally certified authentic Japanese culinary brands in Shanghai.
  • In-house buckwheat grinding from whole grain is an almost unique practice in China, preserving the full nutty flavor and freshness of the noodle.
  • Nine Shanghai locations mean Monbei soba is accessible from Hongqiao, Gubei, and central Changning without significant travel.
  • The full izakaya menu—sashimi, grilled fish, fried dishes—makes it a complete dinner destination, not just a noodle stop.

The Hongqiao flagship (Xingyi Road) is the longest-running and most popular branch; a reservation is advisable for Friday and Saturday dinner. — Format: Izakaya. Authenticity: Listed by JETRO Taste of Japan as one of thirteen outstanding Japanese restaurants in China; operates nine soba restaurants in China, mainly Shanghai; hand-grinds buckwheat grain in-house for every batch of soba noodles; full menu includes sashimi, grilled, fried, and stewed items; reviewed in Japanese on Tripadvisor by Japanese customers praising authenticity.
