About
Opened in November 2025 on St. Clair West, The Onda is a family-driven omakase counter where chef Yoon Taiki Choi — who trained and served at Yasu and Michelin-recommended Okeya Kyujiro — and his brother-in-law Chef Sun Woo pool over 50 years of Japanese omakase experience. The intimate room seats just 14 guests and offers a 20-course dinner omakase priced at $250 and a 14-course lunch for $135. The philosophy draws deeply on Japanese counter culture: seasonal ingredients, restrained presentation, and dishes that honour both Japanese technique and the chefs' bicultural sensibility. Reservations via OpenTable; groups of five or more and private dining inquiries go to info@theonda.ca.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- Alumni of Yasu and Michelin-recommended Okeya Kyujiro with 50 combined years of Japanese omakase mastery
- Intimate 14-seat counter format mirrors the rarefied sushi counter experience found in Tokyo
- 20-course dinner and 14-course lunch omakase offer exceptional value at the city's most exciting 2025 opening
- Family-run kitchen with a deeply personal approach to Japanese seasonal cuisine
Chef Yoon Taiki Choi has a Korean-Japanese culinary background. Authenticity is based on Japanese omakase training (Yasu, Okeya Kyujiro) and strong traditional approach; not Japanese-born ownership.
