About
Sou Ramen Lab was established by chef Takeshi Sekigawa, whose ramen journey began two decades ago at a Tokyo iekei ramen shop. After moving to Sydney in 2010, he became the opening chef at the legendary Gumshara and later head chef at Yasaka Ramen before launching his own concept. The Chatswood location — the active outpost after the North Sydney branch closed — operates within Westfield's Hawker Lane food court. Sekigawa's signature is a deeply flavoured chicken-based broth, methodically developed over his career, served with a rotating menu that includes tsukemen (dipping ramen) and classic Japanese café dishes. A committed Japanese ramen craft in a casual format.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • Led by Takeshi Sekigawa, one of Sydney's most experienced Japanese ramen chefs, with 20 years of craft beginning in Tokyo.
  • Sekigawa was opening chef at Gumshara — Sydney's most celebrated tonkotsu ramen house — before launching his own concept.
  • Specialty chicken-based broth represents a more refined, light alternative to the dominant tonkotsu style in Sydney.
  • Rotating specials including tsukemen showcase Sekigawa's range and commitment to evolving Japanese ramen culture.

North Sydney branch (141 Walker St) closed; Chatswood is now the sole active location. Owner Jonathan Yu and chef Sekigawa had a dispute resolved at Fair Work Commission August 2024 — Sekigawa was dismissed but is shown at this location per March 2026 Wanderlog listing.
