About
Sushi Ran opened on Caledonia Street in Sausalito in the mid-1980s under Japanese owner Yoshi Tome and became the epicenter of Japanese culinary training in the Bay Area. Over four decades, it produced some of the region's most acclaimed Japanese chefs: Mitsunori Kusakabe (Kusakabe SF), Takatoshi Toshi (Kinjo), and Sachio Kojima (Sushi Aoba) all honed their craft here. The restaurant earned a Michelin star in 2006 and currently holds a Michelin Bib Gourmand, recognizing consistent quality at a price point below San Francisco's most expensive omakase counters. Executive chef Takanori Wada now leads the kitchen, continuing a menu that blends classic Japanese sushi with seasonal California-Pacific ingredients. A 12-seat omakase sushi bar — priced at $185 prix fixe — anchors the offering, alongside à la carte dining for the full dining room.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • Michelin Bib Gourmand (2025) and a Michelin star in 2006 confirm Sushi Ran's decades-long position as one of California's finest Japanese restaurants.
  • The restaurant has trained an extraordinary alumni roster — Kusakabe, Toshi, Kojima — making a dinner here a direct link to the Bay Area's entire modern sushi lineage.
  • The 12-seat omakase sushi bar at $185 prix fixe delivers a world-class experience in the charming waterfront village of Sausalito.
  • Over 40 years of Japanese ownership under Yoshi Tome has maintained an authenticity and seriousness of purpose rare in US Japanese restaurants.
