About
An Japanese Restaurant occupies a quiet, intimate perch on the upper level of San Francisco's Japan Center East Mall — only 12 seats at the counter, plus a handful of small tables. Chef-owner Daisuke Takiguchi, who previously ran Kenzo in Napa, took over the space from its founding Japanese chef Kiyoshi Hayakawa and has maintained the restaurant's core philosophy of accessible, high-quality Edomae sushi. Menus range from a nigiri-forward omakase ($145) to a sushi-kappo style course ($135), featuring fish flown from Japan and the Pacific, presented simply and explained by the chef at the counter. Regulars praise the value, the seasonal variety, and the unhurried pacing that recalls intimate sushi bars in Tokyo.
