About
Chef Masaaki 'Uchi' Uchino spent sixteen years mastering his craft at Michelin-starred Sushi Nakazawa DC, where he held the restaurant's star for four consecutive years before departing to open his own projects. At Katsumi, which took over the Logan Circle space vacated by Bar Japonais in early 2026, Uchino presents a modern Japanese menu that balances accessibility with ambition: fresh nigiri and sashimi à la carte, bold hot dishes, Japanese-inspired skewers, and craft cocktails complement a reservation-only 9-course omakase of 16 seasonal selections. The late-night hours (until midnight on weekends) give the restaurant a vibrant energy uncommon in DC's Japanese dining scene.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- One of DC's most decorated active sushi chefs — four Michelin-starred years at Nakazawa — now with his own Logan Circle stage.
- Rare combination of walk-in accessible sushi bar and reservation omakase in a single space.
- Late-night kitchen hours until midnight on weekends for post-show or spontaneous high-quality Japanese dining.
- Modern Japanese aesthetic with bold hot dishes and cocktails alongside the sushi program — not a traditional omakase-only format.
Confirmed authentic: Japanese-led kitchen (Masaaki Uchino, Fukuoka-born). Opened February 2026. Resy reservations.
