About
When Sakedokoro Makoto — the beloved Japanese restaurant that occupied this Palisades space from 1994 to 2018 — finally closed, the building sat until Minoru Ogawa stepped in with a fitting tribute. Ogawa, who also helms Sushi Ogawa and Zeppelin, trained as a second-generation sushi chef in Tokyo's Nippori district and brings impeccable Japanese credentials to every concept he touches. At Kappo DC, he presents an 8-course kappo tasting menu that celebrates Japanese A5 wagyu alongside seasonal delicacies — a format that bridges traditional kaiseki and the intimacy of a counter omakase. Michelin-recommended since opening, it remains one of Washington's most hidden fine-dining gems, known primarily through word of mouth and dedicated food media. Reservations are exclusively through Tock.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- Michelin-recommended kappo counter helmed by one of DC's most accomplished Japanese chefs — in a small space that almost no one knows about.
- 8-course wagyu-centered tasting menu pays homage to a beloved DC Japanese restaurant tradition on the same hallowed Palisades site.
- Only 11 seats at the counter, guaranteeing the most personalized kitchen access of any DC Japanese restaurant.
- Chef Ogawa's fugu license and Toyosu-sourced fish elevate the kappo menu with elements unavailable at most American Japanese restaurants.
