About
Gyoza Hohei traces its origins to 2011, when a six-seat restaurant opened in Gion, Kyoto's most traditional district, and became beloved by the neighbourhood's maiko and geiko. Its simple grilled gyoza, made with original dough and filling recipes, earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand in the Kyoto & Osaka Guide and built a reputation for months-long waiting lists. In May 2023, the brand opened its Paris location at 11bis rue Sainte-Anne, bringing the same gyoza philosophy to France: small portions sized to fit elegantly in one bite, made fresh daily, with a flavour the brand describes as 'one you never tire of.' The chic way to order, as Kyoto regulars do, is to place a second portion when you're halfway through the first. The Paris venue is the brand's only outpost outside Japan.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- Michelin Bib Gourmand-awarded in Kyoto and now available in Paris — authentic Gion-style grilled gyoza with the same original recipe as the acclaimed Japanese flagship.
- The Paris outpost of a Kyoto institution: gyoza so well-loved at home they had months-long waiting lists before even crossing to France.
- Prices well under €25 make Gyoza Hohei the best-value authentic Japanese eat on rue Sainte-Anne.
Gyoza are small, refined, and portioned for multiple rounds — ordering two or three plates is standard and encouraged. The Kyoto-sized portions are designed for delicate, repeat tasting.
