Chef Tetsuya Nakao, born in Toyama, Japan, helped open Matsuhisa Beverly Hills in 1991 before founding Asanebo on Ventura Blvd the same year. The restaurant remains one of the Valley's most respected sushi addresses, listed in the Michelin Guide's California 2025 edition as an 'Iconic' restaurant. Nakao's brother is chef Shunji Nakao of Shunji Japanese Cuisine.
