About
Okan — 'okan' meaning 'mum' in Osaka dialect — was founded by Moto, who arrived in London from Osaka in 1998 with one suitcase and no English, started with a market stall on Brick Lane and later ran a kitchen at The Crypt jazz club in Camberwell before opening a permanent site inside Brixton Village. The concept is rooted in the down-to-earth, no-frills Osakan tradition of okonomiyaki: fried batter pancakes layered with cabbage, proteins and sweet-savoury toppings including Japanese mayo and bonito flakes. Moto's Osaka origins are the defining authenticity marker; the restaurant is walk-in only. No Michelin recognition.
