About
Opened in February 2016 by Tokyo-born ramen creator Tomoharu Shono — who operates roughly ten highly regarded ramen shops across Japan under the Menya Shono banner — and co-founder Abram Plaut, Mensho Tokyo SF transplants Shono's obsessive, ingredient-forward philosophy to San Francisco's Geary Street. The kitchen is anchored by a supremely rich tori paitan (chicken-bone) broth and springy house-made noodles, complemented by seasonally rotating specials that have included spicy lamb miso and matcha tori paitan. The Japanese-owned, Japanese-led restaurant operates exactly as its Tokyo counterparts: no reservations, counter and communal seating, and a devotion to craft that consistently draws lines down the block.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- First and only US location of Tomoharu Shono's celebrated Tokyo ramen empire
- Signature tori paitan — a creamy, slow-cooked chicken broth unlike any standard tonkotsu
- Rotating seasonal specials keep even regulars returning for new bowls
- Fully vegan ramen option made with the same kitchen artistry as the meat-based bowls
