About
Matoi occupies a compact sushi bar in the Convoy corridor, operating entirely by reservation and strictly adhering to the Edomae ethos — no fusion, no rolls designed for Instagram, just pristine fish prepared with mastery. Co-owner Roger Nakamura, a Sushi Ota alumnus, partnered with chef Trace 'TJ' Jerome, whose career includes ownership of a Japanese restaurant in Yamagata Prefecture. Together they created a relaxed but technically rigorous omakase experience set against a 90s hip-hop soundtrack that cuts through any fine-dining stuffiness. Fish is seasonal and sourced with serious intent, changing as availability and quality dictate. The result is one of the most honest omakase experiences in San Diego.
