About
Masaharu Morimoto, born in Hiroshima and trained in Tokyo, brought his visionary Japanese cuisine to Philadelphia's Washington Square West in 2001 in partnership with restaurateur Stephen Starr. The restaurant's ultramodern interior — glowing illuminated walls, sweeping nautical curves, custom lighting — has remained one of the city's most striking dining rooms for over two decades. The menu spans classic sushi to innovative tasting menus, featuring signature dishes like the toro tartare, yellowtail jalapeño, and black cod with miso that Morimoto helped popularize globally. A second-floor lounge and izakaya space opened in 2025. The restaurant holds Michelin Guide recognition and has been featured in Visit Philadelphia's essential dining guides since its inception.
