Renamed Nanahoshi at the start of 2025, this hole-in-the-wall Soho counter has been championed for years as the pound-for-pound best Japanese food in London — chef Yuya Kikuchi's market-driven sushi and small plates are guided entirely by what's exceptional at the fish market that morning.

About
Known for years as Jugemu, this tiny Soho counter was renamed Nanahoshi in early 2025. Chef-owner Yuya Kikuchi — who previously cooked at the nearby Kikuchi restaurant on Hanway Street — runs a highly personal, ingredient-driven operation from a compact space on Winnett Street. The menu is dictated almost entirely by what Kikuchi finds at the fish market each day, with hand rolls a particular highlight. Reservations are taken via Instagram DM, and the experience is celebrated for its informality, depth of flavour and direct expression of Japanese culinary values. Despite its idiosyncratic service reputation, Nanahoshi has been recognised by Hot Dinners, The Infatuation and Time Out as one of London's essential Japanese destinations.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- Market-driven menu — dishes change daily based on that morning's fish market finds
- Outstanding hand rolls praised as among the best in London
- Soho counter atmosphere: direct, personal and deeply Japanese in spirit
Formerly Jugemu; renamed Nanahoshi January 2025. Reservations via Instagram DM @jugemu.uk.
