About
Shiraki is Athens' most historically significant Japanese restaurant in terms of direct Japanese kitchen heritage. Chef Shinya Shiraki previously ran the legendary Furin Kazan (風林火山) at Apollonos 2 — the first restaurant in Athens to be staffed by a Japanese chef — before reopening under his own name on Nikis Street in the Syntagma district. The menu is deliberately traditional: nigiri, sashimi, chirashi, maki rolls, udon, donburi and tonkatsu, plus tori karaage, all made to classical Japanese standards. A curated warm and cold sake list distinguishes the drinks offer. The small, cosy dining room — with occasional outdoor seating — maintains the unpretentious atmosphere of a genuine Japanese neighbourhood restaurant. Reviewers consistently single out the nattō availability, the quality of the fish and the exceptional value.
Neighborhood & visiting
Shiraki sits in Syntagma / Plaka, one of Athens's neighborhoods where authentic Japanese kitchens have taken root. The house does not publish an online booking link; call ahead to secure a seat, especially on weekends. Check the posted hours before you go — traditional sushi restaurants often close between service periods.
