About
Yayoi was established in Japan in 1986 and has grown to over 600 locations worldwide, all operated by or licensed to Plenus Co., Ltd., one of Japan's largest restaurant groups based in Tokyo. The Galeries location was among the first Australian openings, debuting in 2014. Signature dishes include the wagyu sukiyaki set, golden tonkatsu, and fresh salmon sashimi don, all served on a traditional teishoku tray with rice, house miso soup, and pickles. The menu rotates seasonally in line with the Japanese concept of eating in harmony with nature. The price-to-quality ratio is notably strong for a CBD location.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- Operated by Plenus Co., Ltd. — a Tokyo-listed company running nearly 3,000 food outlets across Japan.
- Serves traditional teishoku set meals following the same nutritionally balanced format as 600-plus locations in Japan.
- Seasonal menu rotation reflects Japan's shun (seasonality) philosophy, a hallmark of genuine Japanese food culture.
- One of Sydney's first dedicated teishoku restaurants, introducing the format to Australian diners in 2014.
First Australian outlet opened Sydney 2014. Same Plenus Co. parent as the Westfield Sydney location.
