About
Gombei is one of the last old-school Japanese diners operating in the United States. Japanese-born founder Shiro Kubota opened his restaurant in 1981 and has remained at the heart of the operation ever since, still behind the counter daily well into his seventies. The menu is a daily expression of Japanese home cooking — ohitashi with ground sesame, simmered dishes (nimono), grilled mackerel, croquettes, curry, fresh tofu — prepared each morning by Kubota himself and his small crew. The restaurant has outlasted decades of change in San Jose's Japantown, becoming an institution for Japanese-American families, homesick expats, and anyone who wants to understand how Japanese comfort food is meant to taste.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • One of the last genuine Japanese home-style diners in America, where the founder personally cooks the same dishes he grew up eating in Japan.
  • A living piece of San Jose Japantown's cultural heritage, operating continuously since 1981 through neighborhood change and generational shifts.
  • The daily-changing menu of nimono, grilled fish, and seasonal sides reflects how a home cook in Japan actually eats — not a restaurant formula.
  • At just $20-24 for a set meal, Gombei offers extraordinary value for food made with genuine care and decades of accumulated mastery.

Cash preferred. The menu is written on a board and changes daily; arrive early as popular items sell out. Walk-ins only. — Format: Casual diner. Authenticity: Japanese-born founder Shiro Kubota (from Japan, arrived in the 1970s) has operated this neighborhood Japanese diner personally since 1981, still working behind the counter daily at 70+.
