About
Kanazawa is one of Portugal's most significant Japanese dining experiences. It was founded by Japanese chef Tomoaki Kanazawa, who served as head chef to the Japanese Embassy in Lisbon before opening this intimate restaurant. When Kanazawa returned to Japan in 2017, he personally entrusted the kitchen to Paulo Morais, a deeply trained disciple of the kaiseki tradition. Michelin awarded the restaurant its first star in 2022, retaining it through the 2026 guide, for 'traditional kaiseki cuisine' — a seasonal, multi-course Japanese culinary discipline with centuries of heritage. At 8 seats, every sitting is an intimate, chef-driven experience.
Neighborhood & visiting
Kanazawa sits in Algés (Belém area), one of Lisbon's neighborhoods where authentic Japanese kitchens have taken root. Reservations are available online — for a focused kaiseki counter this is strongly recommended. Check the posted hours before you go — traditional kaiseki restaurants often close between service periods.
