About
Before Michelin stars and international acclaim, there was Shunka — the Japanese tavern Hideki Matsuhisa opened in the Gothic Quarter in 2001 as his first Barcelona restaurant. The concept was deceptively simple: a Japanese-style tavern in the heart of the old city, where the formality of the Japanese dining ritual was relaxed without compromising on quality or technique. Matsuhisa's kitchen has since earned him recognition as the most important Japanese chef in Spain, and Shunka remains the most accessible entry point into his world. The daily opening hours for both lunch and dinner, the broader à la carte menu, and the Gothic Quarter location make this the most visited of the five Grupo Shunka establishments. The bar is the best seat in the house: at different stations you can watch a sashimi specialist, a maki chef and a cooked food cook all working simultaneously.
