About
One of Vienna's longest-running Japanese restaurants, Unkai opened at the Grand Hotel Wien in 1994 and has been a training ground for some of Austria's most celebrated Japanese chefs — both SHIKI's sushi master Hiroki Takahashi and Sakai's chef-owner Hiroshi Sakai honed their skills here. The restaurant spans multiple dining areas: a ground-floor sushi bar, two teppanyaki grills where chefs cook tableside, private dining rooms and traditional tatami rooms where guests are served by kimono-dressed staff. Gault&Millau has consistently awarded Unkai its prestigious 2-toque distinction.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • Vienna's most historic Japanese teppanyaki experience — operating since 1994 on the prestigious Ringstrasse

  • Two original teppanyaki grills where chefs perform tableside cooking with theatrical precision
  • Sunday sushi brunch is a Vienna institution, earning Gault&Millau's 2-toque distinction year after year

Gault&Millau 2 toques. Former head chef Hiroshi Sakai (now chef-owner of Sakai restaurant). Sushi master Hiroki Takahashi (now at SHIKI Omakase) was chef de partie 2008–2015.
