About
Tucked into a slender Surry Hills terrace, My Zakaya is the kind of neighbourhood Japanese restaurant that regulars guard jealously. Owner-chef Nobu Maruyama, who hails from Japan, brings a personal and improvisational style to the kitchen — the menu shifts with the seasons and his current obsessions, offering dishes like prawn ramen with rich creamy broth, Ankake crispy gohan, and a rotating roster of Japanese small plates. The compact dining room seats a modest number of guests and reservations are strongly advised. Since 2021 Maruyama has run the restaurant as an extension of the adjacent Marunaka Japan crafts shop, giving the address a distinctly Japanese cultural character beyond mere dining.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- Japanese owner-chef Nobu Maruyama's hands-on presence ensures every dish reflects a personal commitment to authentic Japanese flavour.
- The season-driven menu — updated with creative specials like prawn ramen and Ankake crispy gohan — offers cooking that evolves far beyond a static izakaya formula.
- The small dining room and neighbourhood intimacy create the warm, unguarded atmosphere that makes a great izakaya feel like someone's home.
My Zakaya and the Marunaka Japan crafts shop operate from the same Bourke Street address. Opening hours updated as of October 2024 to include a Tuesday dinner service.
