About
Kei Tokiwa grew up connected to Japanese rice-farming culture through her grandmother, and trained in Sydney's Japanese dining scene at Chaco Bar before creating Amuro as an ode to rice in all its forms. The 20-seat diner on Crown Street combines a counter-forward layout with a glass-doored 'Boutique Saké Room', stocked with regional Japanese sake rarely seen outside specialist bars. The menu changes almost daily and incorporates contemporary Chinese and American influences alongside core Japanese preparations — a reflection of Tokiwa's Sydney upbringing without compromising the restaurant's fundamentally Japanese identity. Walk-in only; there are no online bookings, which keeps the experience spontaneous and neighbourhood-focused. Reviewed favourably by SBS Food and Time Out Sydney.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- Owner Kei Tokiwa's Japanese rice-farming heritage and training at Chaco Bar create a sake bar with deep cultural roots and genuine expertise in nihonshu.
- The 'Boutique Saké Room' stocks regional Japanese sake rarely available in Sydney restaurants, making Amuro the city's most compelling destination for nihonshu discovery.
- The daily-changing menu and walk-in-only policy give Amuro the relaxed spontaneity of a favourite neighbourhood diner — an unusual quality in Sydney's omakase-dominated Japanese scene.
Walk-in only; no online reservations. 20 seats. Counter seating is the norm. SBS Food and Time Out Sydney reviewed.
