About
Mutsuko Soma was born in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, and trained extensively in Tokyo's soba tradition before becoming the only chef on the West Coast who rolls soba by hand. She opened Kamonegi in 2017, creating a restaurant that has earned national acclaim for the purity and skill of its craft. As a Food & Wine Best New Chef (2019) and James Beard Award finalist, Soma has elevated soba from simple noodle to a vehicle for seasonality and precision. Her accompanying tempura — duck, foie gras tofu, and wildly seasonal ingredients — demonstrates a mastery that extends well beyond the soba bowl.
