About
Opened in January 2016 as the casual counterpart to the Michelin-starred Omakase, Okane occupies a lively, intimate space at 669 Townsend Street in San Francisco's SoMa Design District. Owner Kash Feng enlisted Japanese-born chef Akifusa Tonai — who was born and raised in Japan — to lead a kitchen that sources its fish directly from Tokyo's Toyosu Market, matching the quality of its prestigious neighbor at a fraction of the price. The menu spans traditional and refined Japanese comfort food: pristine nigiri combos, sake-lees-marinated cod, and contemporary rolls like the Shinjuku (snow crab, A5 Wagyu, avocado). The Michelin Guide has awarded Okane its Bib Gourmand designation — good quality, good value cooking — every year since 2017, recognizing it as one of San Francisco's best izakaya values.
