About
Born in Shizuoka, Japan, Keigo Onoda brought a piece of the Tokyo metropolitan izakaya culture to Madrid in 2009 when he opened Hanakura — the first restaurant in Spain to offer okonomiyaki. Hanatokura/Hanakura is itself a chain of izakayas from the Tokyo area, giving the Madrid location a genuine institutional Japanese pedigree. The menu is a celebration of casual Japanese eating: teppanyaki, donburi, gyoza, yakisoba and robata-inspired grills, all executed with the rhythmic efficiency of a practised Japanese kitchen team. Onoda's contribution to Japanese cuisine in Spain was recognised with the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en el Trabajo — the first ever awarded to a Japanese national in Spain. His Grupo Hanatokura now operates five restaurants in Madrid including the Ramen Kagura chain.
Neighborhood & visiting
Hanakura sits in Chamberí, one of Madrid's neighborhoods where authentic Japanese kitchens have taken root. Reservations are available online — for a focused izakaya counter this is strongly recommended. Check the posted hours before you go — traditional izakaya restaurants often close between service periods.
