About
Sushi Erika opened in 2018 when chef Erika Michio decided to honor the legacy of her father, the late Japanese sushi master Michio Kushi, who ran the legendary Japanese Market & Sushi Deli in Miami for decades before its closure in 2017. Erika trained beside her father throughout his career, mastering the same exacting standards for fish sourcing and preparation that made his restaurant an institution. Tucked into a corner strip center on the Kennedy Causeway in North Bay Village, the intimate spot is open for lunch only, with a devoted following that regularly queues before opening. The menu is built around beautifully simple sushi and sashimi — uni from Japan and Canada, housemade rolls, and seasonal specials — alongside a small sake and beer program. Mochi desserts and green tea tiramisu provide a traditional Japanese finish. Reviewers consistently call it the best sushi in Miami.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • Erika Michio's direct training under her father, one of Miami's most respected Japanese sushi masters, means every piece of fish reflects a generational standard of craftsmanship.
  • The simple, lunch-only format keeps the kitchen focused: no shortcuts, no dinner rush corners cut, just the best sushi the team can make.
  • Seasonal uni from Japanese waters, alongside daily specials, ensures the menu reflects genuine Japanese ingredient philosophy rather than a static roll list.
  • Despite no reservations and regular queues, the wait is considered by regulars to be entirely worth the consistently excellent, affordable quality.

No reservations accepted; arrive at or before noon to avoid a long wait. Entire order must be placed at once to manage kitchen flow. Lunch only — kitchen closes around 17:30-18:00. — Format: Sushi counter. Authenticity: Chef-owner Erika Michio trained alongside her late father, Japanese master sushi chef Michio Kushi, for over a decade at his legendary Japanese Market & Sushi Deli; the restaurant carries forward a decades-long tradition of family Japanese sushi craftsmanship in Miami.
