Founded by Japanese chef Masahiro Uchiyama and celebrated as one of Tokyo's finest izakayas, Uoharu brought its distinctive daily Toyosu Market sourcing and theatrical warayaki (straw-seared) cooking to Hong Kong in 2018 — the brand's first international branch. Two locations in Central and Pacific Place serve a broad menu of seafood-led izakaya dishes in an authentic Tokyo atmosphere.

About
Uoharu's arrival in Hong Kong in 2018 marked a significant moment for the city's izakaya scene: here was a Tokyo institution with a genuine commitment to sourcing fresh seafood daily from Toyosu Market, designed and staffed to replicate — not interpret — the authentic Japanese izakaya experience. From the hand-written daily fish specials and the open robata grill to the theatrical bonito warayaki performance (straw burning at up to 900°C that sears the surface while leaving the centre raw), every detail reflects the spirit of the Tokyo original. The menu spans sashimi, grilled fish, sushi rolls, wagyu sando and stuffed mushrooms alongside an extensive selection of sake and Japanese whisky. A second location in Pacific Place — opened in 2021 — has extended Uoharu's presence to Admiralty, with the same format and sourcing standards.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • Daily air-freight from Toyosu Market means the fish and seafood at Uoharu reflect Tokyo wholesale standards — a meaningful difference from restaurants that source locally or less frequently.
  • The live bonito warayaki performance — straw-burning at extreme heat to sear just the fish's surface — is a spectacle unique to Uoharu in Hong Kong and a highlight of every visit.
  • Two conveniently located branches in Central and Pacific Place (Admiralty) mean Uoharu is accessible across Hong Kong Island's main dining hubs.
  • Japanese uniformed staff and a robata counter designed to mirror Tokyo originals make this one of the most atmospherically faithful izakaya experiences in the city.

First overseas branch of Tokyo's Uoharu; second location in Pacific Place (Admiralty); Pacific Place reservations via SevenRooms.
