Named after Japan's celebrated Nadagogo sake-producing region in Hyogo Prefecture, this Wan Chai izakaya presents three distinct culinary concepts — yakitori, robatayaki and washoku — under one roof, led by two Japanese veteran chefs: Okinawa-born Shimoji Atsushi on robata and Tokyo-trained Tsunenori Takahashi on yakitori.

About
Nadagogo opened in 2024 on Wan Chai's Ship Street and quickly became one of Hong Kong's most talked-about new izakayas, earning a TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice award and landing in the top 150 of all Hong Kong restaurants within its first year. The name pays tribute to Japan's Nadagogo sake belt in Nishimiya and Kobe, and the drinks programme leans heavily on Japanese sake, whisky highballs and Japanese craft beer. Chef Shimoji Atsushi, born in Okinawa, brings global influences to the robatayaki station, while chef Tsunenori Takahashi, trained in both Tokyo and Hakata, handles the yakitori counter. Al fresco seating on Ship Street adds a rare open-air dimension to the dining experience. The menu spans seasonal sashimi sets, wagyu preparations, charcoal-grilled yakitori and slow-cooked robata dishes.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • Two distinct Japanese kitchen veterans — one from Okinawa specialising in robata, one from Tokyo and Hakata specialising in yakitori — create a menu depth that a single-concept izakaya simply cannot match.
  • The outdoor seating on Ship Street is among the most atmospheric al fresco dining options in Wan Chai, giving the evening an unexpected Tokyo-back-alley feel.
  • Named after and inspired by Japan's most important sake region, the drinks programme is a serious and well-curated accompaniment to the food — not an afterthought.
  • A TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice winner in its first year, ranking in Hong Kong's top 150 restaurants, demonstrating that the quality is consistently recognised across a large number of independent diners.
