Fukuro is Black Sheep Restaurants' spirited tribute to Tokyo's boisterous late-night izakayas, opened in SoHo's Elgin Street in 2018 and anchored since 2024 by head chef Kazunari Araki — a Japanese chef who brings an authentically homegrown approach to izakaya cooking. The dimly lit ground-floor space buzzes every night with the energy of its inspiration.

About
Inspired by Ginza's worker-friendly basement watering holes where suits loosen and plates pile up, Fukuro channels the unruly conviviality of Tokyo's izakaya culture into a SoHo space that is permanently packed from opening to close. Since 2024, head chef Kazunari Araki — affectionately known as Chef Kazu — has led the kitchen with Japanese technique and a commitment to izakaya fundamentals: small plates designed for sharing, robust flavours and a drinks list that rewards long evenings. The menu rotates seasonally, with consistent standouts across yakitori skewers, izakaya classics and creative plates that reflect Kazu's Japanese culinary heritage. Walk-in only for parties of three or fewer; parties of four or more can book the omakase tasting menu. The World's 50 Best Discovery platform has listed Fukuro as a recommended bar and dining destination.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- Head chef Kazunari Araki's authentic Japanese upbringing and izakaya cooking heritage have given Fukuro's menu a genuine depth that distinguishes it from imitation Tokyo-themed bars.
- Open every night until midnight, Fukuro is one of Hong Kong's most reliable destinations for a high-quality late dinner when other quality Japanese kitchens have closed.
- Listed by the World's 50 Best Discovery platform, and backed by Black Sheep Restaurants' operational standards, the bar programme is as serious as the food.
- The energetic, no-reservations format (for smaller parties) creates a spontaneous buzz that is true to the spirit of Tokyo's best izakayas — come with friends, eat whatever arrives.
New head chef Kazunari Araki (Japanese) took over August 2024; walk-in only for ≤3 guests; reservations for 4+ (omakase format); World's 50 Best Discovery listed.
