About
Café by Dokuwa opened in April 2021 on Marktstraße as a compact Japanese bento and coffee concept run by Aiko Hagen-Takenaka, who is Japanese, and her husband Ken. The café operates as a daily-changing menu: two fresh bento variations are prepared each morning — typically one with meat or fish and one vegetarian or vegan — using Japanese cooking methods and predominantly regional, seasonal produce. Japanese homemade curry is a permanent fixture. Only 50 bento boxes are made each day; pre-orders via Instagram are advisable. The concept was featured in Die Zeit as a benchmark for authentic Japanese bento culture in Germany, and it laid the culinary foundation for the larger Izakaya by Dokuwa project that followed in autumn 2021. Small seating area inside and stools outside for fair-weather lunches.
