About
Guu Izakaya opened in August 2000, making it the first restaurant to properly introduce the Tokyo izakaya experience—high-energy small-plates, Japanese whisky highballs, and boisterous communal dining—to Vancouver. Japanese owner Yoshinori Kitahara of Kitanoya Marketing Corp. built Guu from a single Robson Street address into a multi-location operation that still honours the spirit of the original. The Robson Street location maintains the lively, welcoming energy of a great Japanese izakaya: servers call out arrivals, portions are designed for sharing, and the sake and beer list is serious. Over 25 years, Guu has shaped Vancouver's entire izakaya culture and remains the definitive reference point.
