The original Izakaya Sankyu opened in 1997 and became one of the Chicago suburbs' most trusted authentic Japanese destinations, frequently cited by Japanese community members as a place where you find 'real' izakaya small plates and floor-table seating evoking Japan. When the previous ownership retired, Japan-born restaurateur Sandy Yang—who also operates omakase restaurant Omakase Shoji—stepped in to revive and refresh the concept, reopening in April 2025. Yang brought a team of skilled Japanese chefs and reinstated the beloved tatami room, pairing it with an updated sushi and ramen menu. The late-night Friday and Saturday service until 2:00 AM fills a gap in the northwest suburbs for serious Japanese food after hours.
