About
On The Bridge sits literally on the Webster Street pedestrian bridge connecting Japan Center's West Mall to the Kinokuniya building — a physical and culinary bridge between Japanese and Western cultures. Japanese chef-owner Mitsuhiro Nakamura opened the restaurant in September 1992 and has made it one of Japantown's most beloved institutions, earning it recognition as a San Francisco Legacy Business. The menu focuses on yoshoku — the distinctly Japanese take on Western food that emerged during the Meiji era — including Shinjuku-style chicken and beef stock curries, 23 varieties of wafu (Japanese-style) pasta, okonomiyaki pizza, Japanese-style hamburgers, and omu-rice. Nakamura's three daughters help run the operation, making it a true family business that has sustained itself through nearly 35 years and the full sweep of San Francisco's restaurant cycles.
