About
Opened in 2020 by Sangtae Park and Kate Park next to their acclaimed Omakase Yume, TenGoku Aburiya translates to 'Grill Heaven'—a name that perfectly captures its devotion to binchotan white-charcoal cookery. Under the direction of Japanese head chef Keisuke Ito, the kitchen turns out traditional izakaya fare including yakitori skewers, grilled black cod kama, wagyu fried rice, and maze soba alongside a thoughtful selection of Japanese whisky and sake. The warm, unpretentious dining room offers both counter seating and tables, making it equally suited to a casual weeknight meal or an extended feast. Chicago Magazine called it 'a fine izakaya' and a 'real gift to the dining scene,' praising its value relative to the Michelin-starred space next door.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- Led by Japanese head chef Keisuke Ito, whose binchotan-grill technique honours the precise traditions of Tokyo izakaya dining.
- Born from the same culinary vision as Michelin one-starred Omakase Yume, delivering high standards at approachable izakaya prices.
- An extensive skewer menu cooked over Japanese white charcoal is paired with one of Chicago's better curated sake and Japanese whisky lists.
- One of the few West Loop restaurants open Sunday evenings, making it a reliable destination for authentic Japanese comfort food any day of the week.
Owner/operator Sangtae Park is Korean-born; authenticity is anchored by Japanese head chef Keisuke Ito confirmed by Chicago Magazine (Feb 2022).
