About
Julia Momosé was born in Japan and spent her formative years there before eventually settling in Chicago, where she opened Kumiko in 2018 as a vehicle for her vision of Japanese cuisine beyond sushi and ramen. The bar occupies a warm, jewel-box space on West Lake Street, where Momosé—now also serving as executive chef since late 2024—prepares dishes rooted in the Japanese home-cooking and convenience-store food of her childhood: chicken karaage, Japanese curry rice built from toasted spice bricks, katsu sando on shokupan, and dashi-forward broths. An $180 tasting menu offers a kaiseki-inflected progression with four beverage pairing options spanning sake, shochu, cocktails, and spirit-free selections. Kumiko earned a Michelin star in 2019 and was named a 2025 James Beard Outstanding Bar finalist, placing it in the top tier of Chicago's dining scene.
