About
Opened in 1997 in Stadshart Amstelveen, Izakaya Tanuki was among the first authentic Japanese izakayas in the Amsterdam area. Japanese chef Kenji Osone-San — who remains part of the team and whose knowledge shaped the entire menu — trained the kitchen in traditional kushiyaki and Japanese technique. The original location features a beautiful Japanese garden and traditional interior with an intimate garden atmosphere distinct from the modern Gelderlandplein branch. The menu spans fresh sushi, kushiyaki skewers, sashimi, and a wide range of small izakaya dishes and shochu alongside sake. Its proximity to the Amstelveen Japanese community ensures a steady stream of Japanese guests alongside the Dutch regulars.
