About
SAOYA (竿屋) carries the spirit of a Kagoshima neighborhood izakaya to Shanghai's Gubei district. Mr. Saoyama — whose caricature appears on the restaurant's signboard — expanded to Shanghai after building a five-restaurant portfolio across Kagoshima Prefecture, bringing authentic Kyushu home cooking including hakata-style beef intestine hotpot (motsu nabe), grilled meats, and hearty izakaya standards. JETRO's Taste of Japan program has certified SAOYA as an authentic Japanese-owned and operated restaurant, one of only a handful in Shanghai to receive this designation. Three Shanghai branches now serve the city's Japanese expat and food-savvy local community. The atmosphere is genuinely convivial — Mr. Saoyama's presence and personality define the tone.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • JETRO Taste of Japan-certified: one of the few Shanghai restaurants with official endorsement from Japan's government trade body confirming Japanese ownership and authentic regional cuisine.
  • Hakata beef intestine hotpot (motsu nabe) — a Kyushu specialty rarely found outside Fukuoka — is a signature dish unavailable at most Shanghai Japanese restaurants.
  • Owner Mr. Saoyama's hands-on management and well-known personality create an izakaya atmosphere more reminiscent of Kagoshima than a typical Shanghai Japanese chain.
  • Three Shanghai locations and five in Kagoshima attest to a proven, stable brand with a decade-plus operational track record.
