About
Kanpai Classic (老干杯) opened in Shanghai in 2015 and is part of the Kanpai Group, founded in Taiwan in 1999 by Soji Hirade — a Japanese exchange student. The concept fuses Taiwanese-Japanese heritage: premium Australian wagyu and Japanese culinary techniques are prepared tableside in an elegant setting accompanied by live jazz. In 2016 the restaurant made history as the world's first Michelin-starred yakiniku restaurant; the Michelin Guide Shanghai 2026 once again lists it as a Selected Restaurant. The kitchen stays true to Japanese yakiniku tradition with its signature tableside charcoal grill.
