About
Poporo Srl was founded by Minoru Hirazawa in 1987, beginning as a Japanese grocery store that supplied Milan's small Japanese community and curious Italian customers with imported condiments, nori, green tea, and snacks. A restaurant licence followed in March 1989, establishing the city's first sushi-ba on the premises. The sushi bar side of the operation — at Via Eustachi 17, directly opposite the gourmet Shiro Poporoya restaurant at number 20 — operates on a walk-in, no-reservation model with a fast-moving counter. Guests order at the checkout, give their name, and are summoned by name when their dishes are ready at one of the six small indoor tables or the outdoor veranda. Signature: 'Sushi Shiro Style' featuring Jumbo-format nigiri and chirashi-zushi with fish layered beneath the rice. The grocery section carries Japanese soy sauce, miso, mirin, vinegar, nori seaweed, instant miso soup, and Japanese rice varieties grown in Spain. Beverages include Niigata beer and a selection of sake. Spending per person is approximately €25–45, making it the most accessible quality Japanese address on the Via Eustachi strip.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • Milan's original Japanese food shop and sushi counter, in continuous operation since 1987 — an irreplaceable piece of the city's culinary history.
  • The brisk walk-in format and €25–45 average spend make Poporoya Sushi Bar the most accessible gateway to authentic Japanese food in Milan.
  • The Jumbo-style chirashi-zushi with fish layered beneath the rice — a Hirazawa adaptation for Italian palates — is a signature you will not find elsewhere.

No table reservations; order at the checkout counter, then wait to be called. Counter stools and small tables inside plus outdoor veranda. The attached Japanese grocery stocks imported condiments, nori, green tea, snacks, and sake. Fast service; expect to turn the table in 30–45 minutes. Delivery and takeaway also available.
