About
Haruo Ichikawa spent decades building Japanese cuisine's reputation in Italy — first at IYO, where his omakase work led to the first Michelin star ever awarded to a Japanese restaurant in Italy in 2015. He later departed to open Ichikawa, his own name-bearing project on a quiet street in Porta Romana. The restaurant divides between a main dining room for à la carte service and an intimate six-seat counter where Ichikawa personally prepares an omakase menu (€120 at lunch, €150 in the evening) that moves through fresh sashimi, meticulously formed nigiri, and personal dishes drawn from Japanese home cooking and street food traditions. Michelin's 2026 inspector describes him as 'one of the culinary masters who played a part in introducing Japanese cuisine to Italy.' The counter seatings fill quickly and the chef's presence is the anchor of the experience.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • The chef who gave Italy its first Japanese Michelin star now presides over an intimate six-seat counter where the omakase is shaped entirely by his personal culinary history.
  • Beyond sushi and sashimi, Ichikawa offers rare house dishes and Japanese street food that reflect decades of living and cooking between Japan and Italy.
  • Michelin-listed 'Good Cooking' and Gambero Rosso Tre Bacchette 2025 — exceptional credentials at a price point more accessible than Milan's starred Japanese rooms.

The omakase counter (6 seats) is only available for dinner Tuesday–Friday and lunch–dinner Saturday; the chef is personally present. À la carte table service available in the adjoining room. Reservations via ichikawa.superbexperience.com or +39 02 4775 0431.
